The popular way to express it is the phrase to “save face” and this refers to a person having a distinct style or character of one’s own sense of dignity or prestige and in all social contexts.
We refer to the phrase sometimes with the expression “to save face” which describes the lengths we individually may go to in order to preserve our established position in society, whether society-wide or just among friends, co-workers, businesses, personal relationships or other interactions. It is the essence of taking an action to ensure that we are not thought badly by our peers.
To save one’s face is fundamental in the conceptual fields of sociology, sociolinguistics, semantics, politeness theory, psychology, political science, communication, and face negotiation theory, and translates at least somewhat equivalently into many world languages.
It is a worldwide concept and people wear the “tells” on their faces when they are embarrassed by their failures to live up to their word. Some of the definitions of the meaning of face and saving face include:
The positive social value one effectively claims for themselves by the stance another person may assume one has taken during a particular contact. So here, Face is defined as an image of one’s self and is delineated in terms of societal approved social attributes.
One’s Face is the respect and/or deference which one can claim for themselves from others. That is to say by virtue of the relative position one enjoys in their social network as well as the degree to which they are judged to have functioned adequately. This applies to the subject position as well as one’s overall conduct and whether such is acceptable or not.
One’s Face or Saving Face is definitely a showing of something that is emotionally invested. Face can be readily lost, or it can be maintained, or even enhanced. Face certainly must be constantly attended to in every interaction, lest you lose some Face.
Perhaps most importantly, Face is a sense of one’s worth and emanates from knowing one’s status in life and reflecting concern with your word and reliability of one’s performance or appearance and one’s real worth.
Last, Face means one’s prestige; dignity; honor; respect; status and all these can come from you knowing “being there counts.”
